Converting to a lossy format such as JPG or WEBP re-encodes the pixels, so a small amount of detail is discarded. Choosing a high quality setting keeps the difference invisible. Converting to PNG is lossless.
Browsers decode the formats they support. If your browser can open the HEIC file, the converter can read it; otherwise convert it once on the phone before uploading.
Transparency is preserved when you convert to PNG, WEBP, AVIF or GIF. JPG and BMP have no transparency, so transparent areas become white.
